On The Rocks Release Day Launch + Giveaway

On the Rocks - Alyssa Rose Ivy
  *** ON THE ROCKS Synopsis***
Love is best served on the rocks. My roommates look really good naked. At least one of them does. I’m sure the other one does too, but I haven’t seen him without his pants on. Living with two guys wasn't something I’d ever considered, but the opportunity fell in my lap, and I’d have been crazy to turn it down. College went by in a great big blur leaving me with less of a direction than I had going in. Add in a family that wanted nothing to do with me, and my post-college plans were less than clear. What’s a girl to do when she has nowhere else to turn? She moves to the Outer Banks and learns to bartend. After all, it was my horrible bartending skills that led me to my roommate’s bed and into his heart.

   ***EXCERPT***
I heard the water in the sink running, and I assumed someone was brushing their teeth. I knocked while pushing open the door. “I just need my—” The rest of my words were lost as Macon turned toward me. There he was holding a toothbrush and wearing nothing. Absolutely nothing. “Oh my god. I am so sorry.” I backed out without finding my brush. “Can I help you?” His voice was amused. How was he amused? “Why are you naked?” “Because I just got out of the shower.” I kept looking down. “But you were brushing your teeth.” “I like to dry off before I get dressed. You should try it sometime.” “That’s what a towel is for.” I heard the ping of the towel bar. I glanced up, half hoping he’d be covered and half hoping he wouldn’t be. He had a towel tied around his waist. “I guess we’re even then.” “Even?” I could barely think straight. I was still picturing Macon naked. “Yeah, I walked in on you in a towel, now you’ve seen me baring it all. We’re good to go.” “I wasn’t naked.” He grinned. “So what you’re saying is now I’m the one with the extra points. Nice.” “You’re crazy.” “I am? You’re the one who opened the door without waiting for an answer, and what did you need anyway?” “My brush,” I answered sheepishly. He was right, I did pretty much barge right in. “Here you go,” he held out the brush. I took it, and my hand brushed against his in the process. Even tiny touches from him got me. “Thanks, and sorry.” “Not a problem, roomie.” “Okay.” “Is there anything else?” “Oh, no. Nothing.” I backed out the rest of the way and closed the door. Could I get more embarrassing?

Book Review + Giveaway — Contractually Yours by Connie Cox

Broken vows...

Wedding planner Caroline Duplessis sinks all her hopes, dreams and finances for the future success of her budding company Weddings Divine into the event of the year.

But when Brandon D’Estrahan’s intended leaves him at the altar, she also leaves Caroline holding enough debt that her fledgling company is on the edge of bankruptcy. And the second mortgage her parents took out on their home will leave them homeless.

So when the groom, who needs an arm ornament and hostess to further his business connections, proposes a way out, Caroline sees no other option but to take it.

Marriage to him for one year and she will walk away with financial security. But will their marriage last the year?

Or, like his former fiancee’, will she find the need to leave him, too?

“The wedding is off,” Brandon D’Estrehan announced as dispassionately as if he were ordering a cup of coffee. “My apologies for the inconvenience.”

For the hundredth time in two days, Caroline Duplessis pushed Replay on the DVD player to study the video of the world’s most respected and feared international corporate raider calling off his wedding from the altar rail.

The wedding photographer in the vestibule had picked up his deep baritone clearly in the huge St. Louis Cathedral in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter. D’Estrehan had looked over the diamond-bedecked crowd as stoic as if his face were chiseled from the same stone his heart must have been carved from.

Caroline zoomed in to study his eyes. No blink. No flicker. Nothing but black irises in dark brown pupils staring out over the distinguished well-wishers.

Ruthless. They had called him cold-blooded and ruthless as they filed out of the church.

Caroline just called him dream killer.

I really enjoyed this read, although on the short side, I liked the characters and the story line. Caroline is the wedding planner who thought she had finally found the jackpot wedding that would put her on the map, sadly the only map it put her on was the debt collectors. She used everything she had to try to get her business to work and nothing could prepare her for the groom calling off the wedding at the last second. Not worrying to much she goes to cash the check only to find out that there was insufficient funds. Behind on her bills and close to totally losing it, she works up the courage to go straight to the groom, Brandon, to try to get something for her troubles and as it turns out she gets way more than she thought. Brandon was close to closing tons of deals with his marriage looming and the playboy ways of his being in the past, but as it turns out his soon to be wife had a husband of her own waiting on her in Italy. Now with no time to waste he is on the hunt for a new bride, when in walks in wedding planner Caroline asking for the money his ex-fiancĂ© didn’t deliver. Sparks fly between these two and a deal is set: after 6 months of marriage, Caroline will have her debt paid, extra money and new clients all she has to do is pretend to be married and happily in love. The problem? Neither of them actual expected to fall in love.

~REVIEW BY VANESSA~

Books have always been Connie Cox’s passion. Many thanks to her mom for that! Connie used to think authors were sophisticated creatures who lived in NYC, went to glitzy parties and wrote as the muse dictated. Then she met one. The writer looked a lot like her-jeans, a few extra pounds, a love of books and a quirky imagination.

Connie’s newfound love for running is taking care of the extra pounds. Her fascination with Jungian psychology takes care of her story lines. And her innate wild imagination does the rest.

People fascinate Connie, especially people who fall in love. Writing romance novels gives Connie the freedom (a lot of freedom!)to explore the chemistry that brings lovers together. It’s an exploration Connie takes seriously as she looks into that sexual spark that turns two singles into a couple. Her story people really have to work hard for that coupling as she sends her characters on a journey of discovery both within themselves and in each other. But the happily ever after makes the journey worth it. And there are often a few laughs along the way.

So why does Connie write? Because, now that she’s discovered the magic of letting loose the people in her imagination, she’s impossible to be around if she doesn’t let them have their way!

With many thanks for the encouragement of that first writer and many who have followed behind her, Connie now lives the dream, writing big stories from her little desk in her little Louisiana town. Even as you read this, she is working on a new story and living her own happily ever after.

As the moon lights the city, Erin unexpectedly becomes infatuated with Tyler and his bartending skills when he offers her a challenge to try his Black Magic drink. With a mission to now try every drink on the menu, one night she can barely remember turns into two weeks of exciting possibilities she never saw coming.
Can Erin put aside her cynical side and let the dirty mouthed bartender show her what island life is really like?

Excerpt
“Sounds like you have it all figured out, don’t you?”
A satisfied smile crossed his face. “Uh-huh.”
“I bet you have a dirty mouth, too?”
By the look on his face, it was fairly obvious he was about to say something dirty. “Sweetheart, you’d be surprised what that mouth can get me and what it can do for you.”
“Wow.” I threw my head back. “You’re so fucking arrogant.”
“Arrogance is a blessing.”
“How so?”
“No matter what you say” — he winked — “you want a man with confidence.”
He had me there.
A raucous burst of laughter brought me out of my island boy trance.
I brought the glass to my lips, finishing my drink, and watched a group of intoxicated girls grind on each other. Next to them, there was a group of men watching, drooling, and then taking them home.
“A girl really did a shot off a guy’s dick?”
Tyler grinned and held up the bottle of tequila in one hand, the other one undoing his belt buckle. “Wanna try?”
“Oh, uh.” I swallowed, and I thought he sensed maybe I wasn’t drunk enough for that, but it did sound appealing to me. I wouldn’t mind putting my mouth on him for sure, the thought tempting, even if I just envisioned it in my mind.
Before I had a lot of time to think about it, Tyler looked around the bar. It was empty for the most part, so he patted the bar. “Hop up here, city girl.”
“On the bar?”
He raised an eyebrow, setting the bottle of tequila on the bar and then placing two limes and salt beside it. “Yeah, what the fuck does ‘hop up here’ mean in city terms?”
“All right, let’s do it.” I gave a nod, as if to prepare myself.
“Off my dick?” You couldn’t miss the eagerness in his voice.
“Uh, no. Something else.”
I jumped slightly when his hands touched my exposed knees, pulling them apart. He then grabbed the salt shaker and made me get on the bar. He moved between my legs, putting his hands on my thighs again. With a firm grip he slid me forward and stood so his chest was in line with mine, so close I could finally smell him. He smelled like summer, warm sand, rum and cologne, fresh and clean.
He let go of me and then drew back far enough that he could raise his hands to pull his T-shirt over his shoulders. Goddamn, was he muscular and tanned. Dark markings scattered his chest and arms with what appeared to be about twenty or thirty different tattoos. I didn’t have a single tattoo, and the thought of getting even one terrified me. But part of me was really excited right then because now I knew he didn’t have a cat’s ass on his stomach. I could work with this.
I snuck a peek at his body again, just one more and proudly noticed him doing the same thing.
Oh yeah, I could definitely work with this.
We stared at each other for a moment, Zac Brown Band bellowing through the bar.
I was fairly modest in my attempt at a body shot and did one off his neck. Licking his soft but rough skin, I took my shot and then sucked on the lime in my hand. He said nothing, showed no real reaction other than his arms tensing when I licked his neck.
We sat there, staring at each other.
It was his turn.
Slowly he bent down to my neck, his lips on my collar bone, but he didn’t stay there. He surprised me when he moved lower, and lower. When he reached my thighs, he slowly spread them apart, his thumbs on my inner thighs, just inches above my knees.
I moaned, tossing my head back. “Of course you’d do that.”
He looked up at me, his head between my legs. “Nice panties.”
“Stop looking.”
I went to close my legs, but he caught them in his firm grip, prying them apart. “I don’t think so. You owe me.”
His mouth moved in, closer, and then closer. The heat from his breath and the humidity had me sweating like crazy. No way did I want his mouth down there. I tried to pull him up by his shoulders, but he knocked my hands away and shook his head.
With his mouth on my left thigh, he slowly licked a trail upward until his nose hit the bottom of my dress. Drawing back just slightly, he reached beside him for the salt, sprinkling it over the path his tongue had just made. Reaching up he placed the lime in my mouth.
Is he serious?
Yep. Looks like it.
I took the lime, willingly. He grabbed the shot and lowered himself once more between my legs. Wanting to tease him, and maybe torture myself, I spread my legs a little farther apart.
He smiled, his eyes a little darker as his hair fell in his face. Nothing was being said, but this was by far the sexiest shot I’d ever experienced.
With absolutely no hesitation, he licked the path he made with the salt, his tongue flat and wet against my overly heated skin. The sensation shot through my body, causing me to jump on contact. He noticed and gripped my thighs a little tighter, holding me still.
Pulling away, he threw his head back and took the shot, and then brought himself to my mouth. At some point I had bitten down on the lime; the juice squeezed down my chin and neck. Licking my neck, then chin, capturing the juices, he then took the lime, smiling the entire time.
Our lips never touched, and I was sadly disappointed. I wanted to kiss him.
He leaned toward me and brought his lips to my ear. “Now imagine that…higher….” His left hand, which was on my thigh, still moved higher until the pad of his thumb was between my legs. He stroked his thumb over my clit, separated from his skin by the thin wetness of my panties, with just enough pressure that I wanted to scream and then shove his entire hand up there.  To say my body was now officially more liquefied than the drinks that this delicious looking bartender served to his customers would be the biggest understatement of the night. I needed him as much as I needed my next breath. Praying that this night ended the way I’d envisioned because this ache wasn’t going to go away on its own.

Something Worth Saving
It was one night, one fate and something tragic destroying something beautiful.
Heavy sheets of smoke curling and rolling together constricting my visions of this life I had.
You see that there?
That wrenching pain in your gut knowing not everything as it seems?
Look closer. That nervous energy you now have, stumbling over words you can’t say, a voice muffled under a mask, a moaning plea to be saved, slurred words on the tip of your tongue, there’s the something tragic.
When I have nothing left to give, nothing left to say, it’s him that brings me back to the moment, in the arms of my firefighter, the warmth of his heart and body, struggling to save his family.
Just Enough
Coming Summer 2014
I want out of this town.
I want to leave and never look back.
He doesn’t knock when he comes in, he never needs to. He knows, as well as I do, my door is always open, waiting.
I crave him. I do. He knows this, I think, I know, and I believe he craves me too. Why else would he come back?
It’s his determination and his will that gets me. That determination keeps me waiting for him in a dreary bay. I’ve always heard my friends say they wanted the rich guy to take them out of this small town that seems to hold us all captive.
Lincoln wasn’t that guy. At first look, he’s a fisherman, married to the sea and weighted by her waves.
Who is he to me?
He’s someone who gives just enough.
He shows me a different way of thinking. A way to give more than just enough.

REVIEW: Take My Hand Series by Nicola Haken

Twenty-four year old Dexter Michaels has arrived in the UK for a fresh start - leaving everything and everyone he knows behind in the states. Determined to put right some of the wrongs he’ll never be able to forgive himself for making and make his Aunt Sarah – the only person left who still believes in him - proud, he lands in London with the intention of working hard, getting his degree and keeping himself to himself. He can’t destroy anybody else that way…

His heart and his body have other ideas however when he finds himself sitting next to nineteen year old Emily Barton in his Psychology class. Moving down south to find her own New Life, Emily is shy, smart and beautiful – everything Dexter knows he should stay away from… everything he knows would be too easy for him to break.

But she makes him feel things he’d forgotten even existed. She makes him laugh, smile, care… forget. Without her trying, and without him realizing, Emily has wound her way into the one place he swore to keep locked away forever – his heart. But can she stay there when she discovers the dark past he’s so determined to keep hidden from her? Or will he destroy her too, just like he always expected?

A figure from Dexter’s past has uprooted all the memories he has tried so desperately to bury… to forget. The terrible events of his past have been blown wide open once again, immersing him a pool of guilt deeper than he’s even experienced before.

Dexter feels powerless. The future he foolishly allowed himself to conceive is falling apart around him and there’s nothing he can do about it. But there’s one thing he can control – one thing he’s an expert at… blocking everything out. Losing all control, Dexter copes the only way he knows how – he dives so far into the well of addiction, the only thing that matters anymore is where his next fix is coming from.

Mission accomplished – there’s no one left. He’s successfully pushed everyone away. Nobody left to care about means no more guilt, right? You can’t hurt people who aren’t there…

But has he really pushed Emily as far away as he thinks he has? She’s given up everything for him – her home, her friends… her whole life. And she doesn’t regret a single thing. But can she save him from drowning, or has he finally sunk too far?

Rachel Mason oozes confidence. She’s outgoing, adventurous and would chop off her right arm before caring what other people think of her or her disability.

Right?

Jared Mattheson on the other hand, is more than a little goofy and a whole lot of carefree. He’s happy living the bachelor life on his father’s credit card, takes nothing seriously and wouldn’t know difficulty if it slapped him in the face.

Right?

With Emily and Dexter away in the States, Rachel and Jared are left behind to keep each other company. They share the same sense of fun, their personalities bounce off one another perfectly and perhaps inevitably, they become best friends. But what happens when the lines of friendship start to blur? How will they cope when the sides of themselves they’ve kept hidden from the world for so long begin to show?

Their journey together may have started with fun, games and alcohol – but it seems the future has other ideas.

Turns out, even the strongest of people need someone to lean on sometimes.

In the final book of the Take My Hand Series, Emily and Dexter are finally on course to a happy future. Arriving back in the UK with Aunt Sarah in tow, everything seems to be slotting into place. For the first time in his life, Dexter has found his purpose. Surrounded by family, friends and the woman he adores, he has at long last made peace with his demons and is determined to fight for the life he now knows he deserves.

With best friend Rachel back by her side and a resolve to work things out with her parents once and for all, Emily’s life is also on the right track. Or so she thinks…

When a tragic revelation threatens to destroy Emily’s world, it sends her spiraling down a path leading to more secrets, lies and heartache – leaving her questioning her whole life and everyone in it. To top it off, Emily almost lost one of the most important men in her life once before, is it about to happen again?

“This is it, doll. Our future. I need you to hold on to it and never let go.”

~Take My Hand~

Take My Hand was a story about tragedy and heartbreak for two souls who haven’t yet healed. Emily and Dexter have both had really troubled past neither of them can seem to run away from no matter how far from home they go. Emily was sheltered very much as a child and because of that she becomes shy and awkward in social settings. Her best friend Rachel is the total opposite of her and has a plan to get Emily out of her shell by providing her a list of “normal” things people do; It is because of this list that Emily meets Dexter. After trying to knock out a few things on her list Emily meets Jared first, who is a friend and coworker of Dexter at The Blue Apple and although Dexter thinks she cute, he has no plans of trying to get anywhere near her. Dexter has the saddest past out of the two and I won’t tell you why but you’ll find out; brace yourself because I definitely did not see that one coming. Emily starts to date Jared for a little while; however, she is drawn to Dexter but doesn’t quite know what the feelings mean so she continues with Jared. After giving it a shot with Jared she finally calls it quits and decides that friends is all they can be and what do you know, Emily has classes with Dexter and this is how it starts. At first, Emily and Dexter become best friends sharing things with each other that no one else knows, but while their friendship grows so does their attraction and while Dexter tries to fight it, Emily can’t. When she tries to make a move he gets scared and she breaks off their friendship for about a month before neither can stay away.  Friends first and then lovers these two seem to have it all figured out, until the past comes to haunt them both and things are revealed that will shock Emily to her core and Dexter will hopefully be able to deal with it before he loses Emily or worse, himself.

 ~Hold On Tight~

This story was way sadder and way more intense than the last one so brace yourself when reading! If you haven’t read the first one do because I don’t want to spoil ANYTHING! Ready? Okay, so in this story we follow Emily and Dexter right where the last book left off and if you’re like me you’re pretty shocked by some events that started to take place. Dexter is taking his mother’s death really hard and starts to revert back to his bad habits. Emily, never having dealt with this kind of thing, has no idea what do and is happy that she’s at least not alone. Never having seen the signs she has no idea that the dark path Dexter is going down is one that will cost them their relationship and Dexter is in no state of mind to think about what’s going on between the two; at this point, he only cares about one thing. Not only is Dexter reverting, but more things from his past come into light and by the time Emily and his Aunt Sarah figure out what’s going on, it’s too late to save him. Emily must make one of the biggest decisions of her life; does she stay and help or does she leave in hopes that it will wake him up enough to see what’s going on? Emily has not only stopped talking to her family but also Rachel and because of the stress she’s going through she can’t seem to get back to Rachel or be there for anyone else.  I can’t really say much more about this book because what I’ve said has probably given enough away but read this book you will not be disappointed. It is better than the first!

~Lean on Me~
I was happy that this story was about Rachel and Jared because just based off the little hints we read in the last two books, I was hoping they would get together. Rachel knows she attracted to Jared but she’s afraid to ruin the friendship so she fights it until her parents give him the perfect segue into the “relationship” talk. Jared finally realizes that the feelings his feeling about Rachel are more than friendly and he knows he has to have her, but with her being stubborn, he knows it’s going to be a challenge. Rachel just doesn’t think anything will work between them, besides the obvious of her being in a wheel chair; she just can’t lose him as a friend, especially because she feels she’s losing Emily. Jared is one of the sweetest guys (which is shocking if you’ve read the other two) and is pulling out all the stops to get her to give him her heart and after two weeks she finally gives in and agrees to give it a shot. Rachel has many insecurities and it doesn’t help that Jared calls her out on it and constantly is trying to get her to fully trust him and little by little, he breaks her walls until love is no longer a choice. Jared however is hiding something and as soon as Rachel finds out what it is, she finds out some news that is a game changer for both of their lives; Jared can no longer hide his secret and now must make a choice: be in Rachel’s and live happily ever after only if he takes care of himself or have her wheel away forever? His decision is decided for him and with no choice, his secret is revealed and now he must learn to live with it while Rachel is by his side supporting him. Rachel is also adjusting to the news she receives and knows that no matter what happens, Jared is it for her and although she’s sad to lose Emily she knows she’s just as guilty by not picking up the phone. Jared and Dexter plan to finally get these two reunited and boy is it a doozy when all of the secrets are revealed! The next book Never Let Go is now available and I highly recommend it!!

~Never Let Go~

This was a bittersweet way to end the series. I really enjoyed these characters and did shed a tear once or twice. I can say that I was a little shocked with this one because a lot of things happened that I did not expect at all. Never Let Go continues on right after the third one left off. Emily and Rachel are finally going to see each other and talk which she will need because it will take the help of their new family and friends to pick up the pieces. Dexter is so close to his dream he can take it but the secret that will affect Emily will affect him just as much and test his new found sobriety.  Rachel and Jared are finally realizing that soon they will be parents of their own babies and with the hope that Emily will be back in her life, she can finally feel complete. I can’t write too much about this book because so much happens that any little thing will ruin it so I will say just pack some tissue ; everyone finally does get their happily ever after’s though it is bittersweet. I really enjoyed this series and was happy that I had the chance read. Although the first book wasn’t my favorite, the rest of the books in the series made up for it and I do recommend it.
