Make It a Double (Last Call #2) Review

Brody Markham has endured a nightmare, spending the last five years in prison and losing everything that was dear to him. Now he’s back home, trying to survive in a world he doesn’t recognize anymore. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further away from their love.

Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, she is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way that money just can’t buy.

Maybe it’s that she recognizes in Brody some of the same characteristics she sees in her homeless wards, but Alyssa is powerless to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.

While Brody struggles to surface from the darkness, Alyssa tries to protect her heart in case he’s not willing to accept the light that she offers him.

I was super excited for this story after I read about Brody in On the Rocks; this book did not disappoint! In the first book about Gabby and Hunter, we meet the other hot twin Brody and his instant dislike of Gabby’s friend Alyssa. No one knows his story exactly or what really happened to him except that he had just been released from prison after 5 years. Brody was no longer the fun loving twin he was before, now he’s the broody, hot headed, closed off twin that no one knows how to reach. Alyssa, although rich, never once was the typical spoiled princess that flaunted her money; she did good things that she wanted to do like running a non-profit animal shelter. She wasn’t one to mind getting dirty and putting in all sorts of crazy hours to make sure her animals were taken care of this to her was what her life was all about. Brody saw none of this and when he was offered to do his community service with her, he bit her head off and she left upset, not speaking to Brody again. When Alyssa comes to Hunter asking for help with something, she’s upset to find out he is not home, defeated but determined, she turns to go back. Brody seeing how upset she was offers his help and although he assumed the worst in her, Alyssa, who isn’t big on pride when it comes to her animals, accepts his help. Once Brody sees how hard working and determined Alyssa is, he regrets taking out his anger on her and offers to help her at the shelter as his community service. Everyone around Brody can see the change in him because of Alyssa and can’t believe how much he is starting to act like the old Brody again. The closer these two get, the more scared Brody seems to be, because how can he give her everything he has when he has trouble finding himself? The more time these two spend together, the more that Alyssa seems to realize that there is way more to Brody than anyone knows. Secrets start to come out that shouldn’t have and the past comes back to haunt them in a way no one thought would happen. Alyssa and Brody will have to fight to be together but with Brody constantly second guessing himself; will it be the outside forces that tear them apart or him? Make it a Double is the second book in the Last Call series. The first book in the series is On the Rocks and I recommend reading it first so that way you can get your backstory on the upcoming character.

~REVIEW BY VANESSA~

USA Today Best-Selling Author, Sawyer Bennett is a snarky southern woman and reformed trial lawyer who decided to finally start putting on paper all of the stories that were floating in her head. She is married to a mobster (well, a market researcher) and they have two big, furry dogs who hog the bed. Sawyer would like to report she doesn't have many weaknesses but can be bribed with a nominal amount of milk chocolate.
