“Chocolate cake meeting chocolate frosting –”
August 2010

Nikki and I had Anatomy at 9:00.

“Once again, no one good looking is in this class. How is that possible? There are about 1,000 guys at this school and not one in here is worth waking up at nine a.m. for,” Nikki whispered.

“Did you ever think maybe…oh, I don’t know, getting up for an education is worth it?”

“Ew. No.” Nikki has always been man-crazy. Since freshman year, she has had well over 10 boyfriends.

“Maybe this is a sign that you should take a break and be single for a while,” I suggested.

“Yeah, right. How about we find you a boyfriend this year,” she asked mischievously.

I began with an over exaggerated head nod. “ABSOLUTELY…not gonna happen.”

“Oh, come on, Kate. You’ve never had a real boyfriend. Surely someone catches your eye?”

“You know I need to focus on school so that I can keep my scholarship.” She turned her eyes back to the door to watch for her next unsuspecting, handsome victim. I couldn’t extinguish the jealous flame flickering within. Born from the upper crust, Nikki had never gone without. Never understood the true meaning of struggling. That’s why she didn’t have to work, like me, everyday to pay for her education, rent, bills, etc... She drove a brand new BMW her dad bought her, just because. The designer tags hung from the sleeves in her closet, and her bank account was bottomless. Of course, I never told her how envious of her I was, and she had the most giving soul. She always tried to buy me trendy boots and purses, but I would never be able to give her anything as extravagant, so I always declined. I wished I had her family, her life, her confidence with guys.

As for looks, she had me beat. Her polished, scarlet locks extended down her back, and thick lashes framed her wide, jade eyes. I’m pretty sure she had never had a zit in her entire life, and why should she? She had nothing to stress over and plenty of time on her hands to be a health freak. You know, “Miss-45-minutes-seven-days-a-week-six-small-meals-a-day.” Whatever Nikki, I thought as she continued the rundown of each guy who walked through the rich, dark wood double doors.

“Oh, oo, oh! Look at him! He’s hot. A little short, but I could wear my new flats on our first date,” she winked.

“Nikki! That’s that guy John you dated last year for two weeks.”

“Oh, so it is. Well, a different year, a different person. Maybe I’ll give him another shot.”

I leaned into her ear. “Did you forget about the fungus thing?”

“No, I didn’t forget. I’ve never jumped out of a bed faster in my entire life!”

We both held back our gag reflexes and started laughing so hard the other students turned around in their seats and stared at us. Always the two trouble makers. Everywhere we went people would stare at us, usually because they were gawking at Nikki, but other times, we would be kicked out for being so noisy.

“Well surely the fungus is gone by now, you think.” She never took her eyes off of him.

“No, Nik.” I shook my head as another giggle rumbled up my throat.

“What?”

“Nothing. Nothing at all.”

The door opened then for the last time, and two more people walked into the classroom. The first was Dr. Goormly, our anatomy professor. The second was another student who was obviously late coming in after the professor. The two exchanged looks, and I could tell from Goormly’s grouchy gaze he was not going to forget this student’s tardiness.

Goormly was the professor everyone warned you not to take, but your advisor always seemed to talk you into taking. Throwing out the… “You’re a very studious student.” “I believe you will be just fine.” “You will see that Goormly is not as difficult as everyone says he is.” Advisors will say just about anything to get you enrolled as fast as they can, but they’re not the ones who have to look at Goormly at 9:00 in the morning for five dreadful months either. Who wants to look at a man who has obviously never looked in a mirror before? His healthy mid-section was hidden behind a stretched orange, plaid pant and a green, long-sleeved button up shirt so tight, gray chest hair snuck out from between the pearl snaps. His socks were green, as well, but only so bold with his black sandals. He wore outdated glasses, too tight for his face, and what hair he had left, he gelled into a comb over. If the wardrobe were not bad enough, his face would say it all. It reminded me of the top of an orange where the peel is squished together to the center point. Goormly’s face looked as if all of his features were sucked into his nose. Staring at his disturbing appearance made it easy to tear my eyes away to the student climbing the stairs.

This guy looked about the same age as me with thick, dark, brown hair that came down slightly past his ears and swooped his forehead underneath his white ball cap. His khaki shorts frayed at the edges, and he wore a maroon, University of Oklahoma, t-shirt with the words “BOOMER SOONER” written across the front. One hand was hidden in his pant pocket, and the other was holding onto the strap of his book bag. Above all of this, I noticed his smile. It was the nervous smile any normal person would wear when walking into a stadium-seated classroom full of about 50 college students who are looking at you and thinking, I’m glad I’m not you. He was searching for a seat, and Goormly asked the students to raise their hands if there was a seat open next to them. Immediately, girls started to adjust in their seats and move their book bags out of the empty ones beside them. Nikki piped up, and at that moment, I think I had never wanted to punch her more in my life.

“There’s an empty seat here behind me,” she said as she glanced over to me with that same mischievous look as before.

My chest felt heavy, and my stomach back flipped. Anxiety set in, and I began to fidget. Why is my body reacting this way? I felt the pellets of sweat at my hair line, and I wanted to run out of the class. He hiked up the steps, and the girls in the aisle seats all primped their hair and batted their eyes as he passed each one. Get a grip. You’re only one second away from acting just like those girls. Stay focused. Keep breathing and DO NOT look as he passes. The urge was too unbearable. As I glanced up, he passed the row in front of ours, and I lost myself. His blue eyes pulled me into his soul forever. I stopped breathing.

Nikki nudged me. “Oh my gosh! Did you see how he was looking at you? Hello? Hey!”

I heard her trying to get my attention, but she sounded far away. I was lost in a trance with my eyes in the same spot where those life-altering, blue eyes first met mine.

“Hello! Are you in there?” Nikki stressed.

I jumped as I heard his books hit the desk behind my left ear. Goormly’s drone broke through.

“Your syllabus is being passed around. We will not waste a class session to go over it. You are in college now. You should know how to read, but I will tell you that as for how my other classes go…if you sit in front, you will make an ‘A,’ rows five through 10, you will get a ‘B,” 10 through 15 a ‘C,’ and well, you know the rest. I will be able to tell on Wednesday what grade you really want.”

I looked at Nikki frightened, and saw my reflection in her facial expression. This class would be difficult, and I was already sure it would be the burden of my semester. Within 10 minutes my hand was cramping from note taking. I finally put my pen down and decided to buy a cheap recorder from Radio Shack after work. Better than risking carpal tunnel. My phone began to vibrate in my pocket. I pulled it out and tried to conceal it behind my purse.

                                                                                                               Nik

ok so really! i know u saw him.

u were still drooling after he

                                                                                       already sat down. Lol

I turned my head and shook it at her. She shook her head up and down at me. I hit reply.

                                                                                                             Kate

yes i saw him. maybe i did drool

a bit, but it was just a moment

of crazyiness. lets just drop it.

                                                                                                               Nik

oh stop being like that. maybe

                                                                                        ill slip him ur number

                                                                                                             Kate

no! nik if u do that i will run

you over with my car while ur

on ur date w/fungus boy & ill

                                                                                             steal ur fab flats!

                                                                                                               Nik

stop being silly. im not really

                                                                                     going out w/fungus boy

Sliding my phone into the front pocket of my purse, I stuck my tongue out at Nikki. She snorted. A gorgeous chuckle resonated from the seat behind Nikki, and chills crawled up my neck. He was laughing, which meant he probably saw us being silly and me sticking my tongue out at Nikki, or he saw the texts. Damn it! I’m usually pretty precise in every move I make. Why am I acting like this? In pure justification mode, I decided there was no way he was looking at me. He must have been looking at Nikki and saw me drooling and couldn’t stop watching me be weird and obsessed. That’s it. It makes much more sense that way. Now that the world feels normal again, I can go back to being my studious self. I retrieved my planner from my backpack and scanned the calendar to see my work schedule.

***

My job had become a place to escape to over the last three years, an escape from the notes, quizzes, tests, and labs. I’ll never forget my first day at Rialto. I applied for the job, because I was a huge movie buff. Coming from a home filled with physical and verbal abuse and watching a mother overdose from prescription drugs created ample reasons to escape in the world of film. Even for just a few hours, I could forget about life outside of those drapery-lined, theater walls and lose myself in someone else’s story. Coming from weekends and summers working at a movie theater back in Tulsa, I had plenty of experience being elbow deep in buttered popcorn and having paper cuts from tearing tickets.

I had been looking for a job for two weeks and was about to give up. I stopped in the downtown corner cafe, The Sandwich Shoppe, to grab an orange pop to cool off from walking the blazing hot sidewalks in dress clothes and high heels. Since it was August, the outfit was a joke. Even the good-looking guy in The Sandwich Shoppe could not stop gawking at me. He spilled the drink twice trying not to laugh, but I was determined to find a job no matter what anyone thought. I walked past a few more window displays until I stopped under an awning to kick off my heels. When I saw the sign on the sidewalk, ‘Happy Hour Drinks – .50 12 oz, .75 24 oz, 1.00 44 oz.,’ I grumbled at the two dollar 16-ounce orange pop in my hand. Just as I slipped the uncomfortable shoes back on my blistered feet, a hammer fell from the roof and crashed onto the sidewalk. A loud, high-pitched voice yelled from the rooftop. “SHIT! Seriously! I’m not a contractor. I am an award winning actor and a hell of a dancer. Why am I up here sweating my ass off?!” I slowly walked out from under the awning, afraid another tool might fall, and squinted to block out the sunlight from my eyes. Standing on the roof, throwing a tantrum, was a tall, skinny guy with blonde punk hair. His tight jeans complimented his white, v-neck tee. His work polo with the Rialto logo was hanging from his pants. He caught me staring and rested his hands on his hips and said, “Well, hello there.”

I squinted, “Death by falling hammer. Not my first choice, but definitely ranks on the freak accident list.” The guy laughed and this unexpected moment immediately brightened my day.

“I’m glad I didn’t hit you with that hammer.” He pointed his finger in my direction. “Because I think we’re going to be best friends.” I laughed at his confidence, and he welcomed me inside.

Heavy, glass doors isolated the cinematic time warp from the rural downtown square. The smell of buttered popcorn, nacho cheese, and chocolate mixed together in an inviting aroma lead customers up the ramp in to the concession stand. A red, wire basket held free, movie posters off to the side, and a claw machine filled with 10 dollar bills wrapped around stuffed animals sung arcade music while children spent their quarters. The walls were dressed with standee cutouts dating back through the 80s, including Edward Scissorhands and Ghostbusters. Towards the back, a hallway lead to a rental section, where new releases, video games, and an even smaller room full of video cassette tapes could be found. A sale shelf of previously viewed DVDs caught my eye, and I was sifting through those when the back door opened. Roof guy wafted his hand in front of his face to create a breeze.

“It feels good to be down from there and in here with the air conditioning. So what are you doing walking around on the hottest day of August in high heels?”

“Sadly enough, I’m looking for a job, and I was just resting under your awning to cool off.”

“Girl, if a job is all you need, then consider it done. I cannot stand half the people my dad hires to work here, but I think you and I will get along just peachy.”

“That’s it? I have a job.”

“If I put in a good word for you, you’re in.”

“Wow, thanks! I’ve been looking for two weeks.”

“Yeah. The businesses around here hold out for the locals. It’s kind of slim pickings come fall for college students. Just fill this out,” he said as he walked into the office and grabbed the file labeled APPS.

“Thanks! What’s your name?”

“Oh sorry.” He dusted his hands off onto his pant legs and said, “I’m Andrew Caylor, but you can call me Andy.”

“Kate Bradford.”

“Well Kate, fill this out, while I top off your pop.”

“That would be great! Orange soda, if you have it.”

Andy nodded approvingly at my choice and walked towards the soda dispenser. I knew he was right. We were going to be best friends. I finished filling out the application and tapped my feet to the beat vibrating from the walls of the action movie playing in the adjacent room.

I wonder where those heels are.

Goormly shut off the overhead projector and flipped the lights back on. My daydream had obviously lasted long enough that class was over, and Nikki was packing her notebooks into her bag. I jumped up, grabbed my bag and was trying to stuff my book and binder in it while I walked through the chairs towards the aisle. Suddenly, my leg caught on a seat that was not put up. I lost my balance, and my unzipped bag was on the floor, its’ contents spread out while pens and pencils traveled down the steps like a waterfall. Weirder than that, I never hit the floor. Two hands caught me, and Nikki’s face told me it could only be him.

I stopped breathing, and I must have made some unearthly noise when I did because he started laughing and leaned down in my ear. “Are you alright?” My brain had officially gone on strike, and I couldn’t form a single word, so I shook my head. He helped me get on my feet and raced down the steps. Figures. I probably smelt bad or wheezed or something. I’m officially a loser. I mean, no one has actually ever run from me before. As I kneeled down to grab my bag and started repacking, my confidence was shot. Repelling men should go on my next resume under special skills. I reached for my binder. It wasn’t so much his hands as his delicious smell that set me off guard. Chocolate cake meeting chocolate frosting – delectable, absolutely enticing.  His smirk forced me to blush and giggle. Idiot.

“I think I caught all of your pens and pencils before they rolled under Dr. Goormly’s desk.” Confusion set it, but looking down to his outstretched hand, I found my pencils and pens.

All I could spit out was, “Thanks.” I figured he would have dropped the utensils and left, but he didn’t. He helped me pick up everything and followed me down the stairs. When we were outside the classroom, he stepped in front of me like he was trying to keep my attention. Like he didn’t already have my heart and my stomach, which was full of butterflies at the moment.

“I’m Jake Maxon.”

“Kate.”

I walked around him and past a few more classroom doors before I realized he was walking next to me. His stare was in my peripheral vision, and I built up the courage to break the awkward silence.

“Hey, thanks so much for helping me out back there. That’s why I hate sitting so far in the aisle. It ups your chance of getting bruised trying to get out.”

“Yeah, me too.” He spoke without taking his eyes off of me.

“I’m probably going to move down to the front.”

“Yeah, me too,” he repeated.

“I really need to do well in this class.”

“Yeah, me too,” he said once more.

“You’re repeating yourself.” I couldn’t look in his eyes. I felt like I was going to throw up, and I think almost falling down the stairs would be enough embarrassment for today. He laughed then with the nervous smile he had when he came in the class.

“Sorry. Hey, um do you want to go eat lunch with me?”

“It’s 10:00.”

“Oh. Well how about breakfast?” he asked persistently. At this point, I was perplexed. Why in the hell would this guy want to be around me any longer than he had to?

“I can’t. I have to get to work by 11:00, and I still need to go back to my apartment to change clothes.”

“You work down at Rialto, right?”

Okay, hot, creepy guy. How the hell do you know where I work? “Yes. How did you know that?”

“Oh, well I’ve seen you there when I’ve gone to rent and buy movies. The Caylors keep my roommate’s and my rom-com collection stocked.”

“Rom-com?”

“Romantic comedies. Uh…it’s a weird guy thing. But I can tell from the look on your face, I’ve creeped you out. I promise I’m not a stalker.”

“No, you haven’t creeped me out. Just an interesting genre choice. Plus, I feel bad, because I don’t remember you coming in.”

“It’s no big deal. I haven’t been in for a long time. I just transferred back from OU.” We were outside walking towards the parking lot, and I was going to be late for work, but I didn’t want to stop talking.

“OU to Northwestern? How does that happen?”

“It’s a long story,” he abruptly answered. Curiosity got the best of me, and I wanted to press forward, but the tone of his voice said it was not appropriate. As I stood there trying to create a new topic to break another awkward silence, his lips kept me entertained, drawing me in to another daydream. Or fantasy. The tip of his tongue peeked out between the plump rims, and his breath caught, pulling me from the unreality. Embarrassment blushed my face, as his all-knowing smile heated my skin and ignited my arousal. I have to get out of here!

“Well, I guess I will see you in class on Wednesday?” I walked backwards to my car, digging clumsily in my purse for my keys.

“Definitely, or maybe sooner,” he said with an incredible confidence as he brushed past my car and walked further on to the parking lot.

I couldn’t help but watch him as he walked to his car, curiously wondering what he meant by seeing me sooner than Wednesday. Khaki shorts have never hugged an ass so right before. Nikki’s ringtone broke my trance.

Another Dirty Dozen, Part II

I read so many wonderful stories in the month of September and October. I can't believe I already have enough to write a second round of dirty dozens. From the looks of these lists, you would never know I hated reading as a child. As a teenager, I actually acted as if I was too cool to sit and read. I was a movie buff. When the time came to complete book reports, I only chose books with movie adaptations. My love for reading came after reading Twilight. Corny? You bet your ass. The older I get, the more embarrassed I am to say that, and I'm not sure why. Twilight meant more to me than just a love affair with Edward; it changed the course of my life. I read the first book in one day followed by the second and third books within the week. Coming from someone who hadn't recreationally read a book in probably 10 years, three books in a week turned my world upside down. After Twilight, I became addicted to the escape.

At that point in my college career, I had no idea what I wanted to do. Music Education...Theatre... Communications...Theatre...Communications...I couldn't make up my mind. In 2009, I left school after my sophomore year without enrolling for the fall semester. I was extremely depressed and decided to bum it for a summer by the pool. No job, no school, no dream. I was pathetic to say the least. Then Twilight happened, and my love for literature became the rope to pull me from the deep dark whole.

Reading just wasn't enough. I had stories of my own to tell but didn't know I had the creativity to put words to paper. Then, one very early morning, I sat down at the computer and began typing. What I wrote was not bestseller worthy, but the words flowed free and filled page after page. Characters appeared, tragedy set the story in motion, and I found my purpose.

My absolute favorite part about writing is how I have no control on who the characters are and the actions they take. In my mind, I know their futures. I know the decisions they plan to make, good or bad. Love or lust, illness or death, their stories play like a movie in my mind. Even if I wanted to change it, I couldn't.

Do I have a story to share with you? Yes, I do. I am working to copyright my work-in-progress project, so I can share it on my blog. Until then, you're just going to have to listen to me ooo and ahh and talk dirty over other great stories.

3-4) The Breathing Series
http://rebeccadonovan.com/

"We were engaged in a very intricate dance of touching without touching, knowing without saying, and feeling without expressing. We were friends walking along a ledge, a very thin ledge - and I was too caught up in my heightened awareness of his existence to realize how close the ledge was to crumbling beneath my feet."

When I first started writing these reviews, I did the "textbook" - this is the characters, this is what the story is about, this is why I love it. This method is a classic and gets the job done, but I always feel like I'm giving too much away. I want you to escape into the story, just how I did. Of course, if I'm listing it on my blog, you have to know I love it to pieces. This series is one to fall in love with, cry over, glue your heart back together, grab another box of tissues, and start all over again. The Breathing Series is a beautifully, crafted story spilling over with love, family, friendship, secrets, thrill, and major cliff hangers! Rebecca Donovan's story will leave you wanting... Luckily, the third and final installment releases June 2013!

Dirty School Girl Fantasy & Another Dirty Dozen Begins

It is time I confess to the world my sick fantasy about sleeping with a professor. Teachers too, but saying Professor in the bedroom is a little sexier than Mister -----. I love to play the dirty school girl. Plaid skirt, thigh-high hosiery, black patten, strap-around-the-ankle heels...no panties. I blame it on daddy issues, and I have a lot of those. I was about to say the older, the better, but then I thought you might throw up. I have standards, but a professor between the ages of 24 and 45 wearing grandpa attire that disguises their average, lanky to medium frame...ooooohhhhhh yyyyyeeeeesssss! I admit I had professors and teachers in undergraduate and high school that just turned me on at first sight. If it was an 8:00 class, I was there looking cute and being extra attentive. There is something about an intelligent man who gets excited about his work that keeps my imagination running in the sack at night. Clicking away at their Power Points, their voice becomes soothing, but then you get caught...

"Professor? Do you think you could give me a quick run through of Chapter 11 before our exam?" Ashton says seductively as she takes her seat on the desk, heels on the leather-bound arm rest of his wing back chair, legs opened to his undivided attention.

"Th-at wou-ou-ld be the um re-re-reproduc-duc-duc-tive chapter." The professor stutters as his hands nervously grasp the crease of his pant legs. He relishes the familiar twitch in his underwear.

"That would be the one, Professor. But I specifically need help on the female reproductive section." She reaches down to massage the folds and directs the Professor's eyes to her most delicate and sensitive apex.

All nervousness disappearing, the Professor confidently says, "It would be my pleasure to help you with that Ms. Ghaemi."

The Professor's thumbs trace circle patterns while leading the rest of his strong hands under her plaid skirt then sliding along her warm, inner thighs. The moment his lips lay gentle kisses on the crease between her upper thigh and her sex, a convulsion ripples through her body causing an arch of her back and her head to fall behind her. She looks down to watch his play of seduction at the moment he peers up to meet her stare and his mouth parts freeing his tongue.

"Ms. Ghaemi? Ms. Ghaemi?" The Professor's urgent and stressed voice pulls me from the depths of my fantasy.

"Yeehhhsss." I say trembling as reality absorbs the fantasy. Chuckles are heard from my peers, as well as the vibration of quiet, shaking laughter coming from my best friend, Joe, in the seat beside me.

"Are you alright?" The Professor's kind and comforting words remind me of his eagerness to pleasure me in his dark office, upon the rich, mahogany desk. The thought provokes another tremble through my body.

"Offf courrssee." My breathy voice reveals the state of my mind, and the other students do not try to conceal their pleasure in my moment of embarrassment.

Returning to his presentation, the Professor leans over his desk to click the mouse for the next slide but not before he looks at my hot, blushed face and gives me a gorgeous smile and a flirtatious wink.

Joe's words break through my trance. "Girl, you betta tuck that bottom lip back up where it belongs. You're drooling on the homework."

"Was I that obvious?"

"Obvious? Shoot honey. I'm gonna have to change my panties after that!"

What possessed me to reveal such an intimate part of my imagination? That would be the first two books on the list, Another Dirty Dozen, Part I.

1-2) Gabriel's Inferno; Gabriel's Rapture
http://www.sylvainreynard.com/

The moment I read this story was about a professor and a graduate student, I downloaded it to my Kindle App. Just by looking at the book covers, you know it's going to be a hot and steamy semester ;-)

Professor Gabriel Emerson has many skeletons in his closet, but like any great wounded and mysterious leading man, he hides behind his prestigious career in education, as well as his passion as a Dante Specialist.

Julia Mitchell is a new graduate student in Professor Emerson's Dante program. She came to the University of Toronto because of Gabriel. Although he doesn't remember her, Gabriel stole Julia's heart many years before. He has become her obsession, but his arrogance and rude demeanor almost causes him to lose Julia, just as he realizes who she is.

The two must keep their connection secret from the eyes of other students, faculty, and administrators, while Gabriel deals with the demons of his past, and Julie travels the rocky roads of innocence, love, and self-discovery.

Gabriel's Inferno and Rapture became my obsession for about a week. I was so sad to see the story come to an end, but earlier this week, I read Sylvain Reynard signed a contract to write a third and final book! So exciting!

The One That Got Away

It's 4:00 am, and I cannot sleep. Drooping eyes and an exhausted body have been battling against my never ending thoughts for the last three hours. They say if you leave your bed and write out what's on your mind, you should clear enough junk out to fall in to a peaceful slumber. Sadly, the story I'm about to tell you will possible find me in my dreams tonight, maybe a day dream tomorrow, and probably every day of this lonely forever.

My "one that got away" story starts on an old, squeaky, yellow, school bus during my sophomore year of high school. I was 15, and our two intermediate school show choirs were traveling home from a competition. "We are the champions" blasted through an old black boom box and rattled the rickety rolled-down windows. We screamed the lyrics at the top of our lungs, because we were bringing home another win for our school. Our teacher and choreographer sat proudly in the front two rows, letting the students in the seats behind have a little too much fun celebrating. Field trips, especially those within the arts programs, are synonymous for shameful behavior. A group of us sitting in the back of the bus decided to start up a game of Truth or Dare. Trouble always comes from the back of the bus. It where the cool kids sit, of course! ;-)

I forgot to mention, we had a new guy in choir that year. Mr. C, we'll call him. Mr. C was an instant hit among the choir students, and not just because we were always so desperate for bass singers! He had a sweet smile and soft eyes; the kind that say everything without saying anything at all. My mom calls them "bedroom eyes." Of course he had a mystery about him, being the new guy and all. But there was something in his eyes you knew had stories to tell. He just had a way about him, something that clued you to think he could be a good listener and a giver of excellent advice.

Back to Truth or Dare. Yes, a bit childish for 14 and 15 year olds, but you can only play so many rounds of Never Have I Ever before some horny teenage boy wants to put some allegations to the test. Anyways, it was known among my fellow choir members I had never been kissed. What do you know? A little dumbass thought it would be hilarious to dare me to kiss the new guy. I was mortified, but I never turned down a dare.

I slid across the aisle into the empty space on ripped, brown, vinyl seats. Mr.C grabbed a blanket and threw it over our heads, so we could have some privacy. He knew I had never been kissed, so we created a plan to pretend to be making out under the blanket by swaying our heads back and forth and close together. (I must note I am incredibly embarrassed about this. How immature could I be?) I will never forget our laughter behind ear-to-ear grins. We stayed under the blanket long enough to draw out a few OOS and AWWS from our friends. Of course, they knew we were faking it.

At this point in time, I was starting in on my second year of being hopelessly in love with the boy I mentioned in my last article. But, after that trip, I started to notice Mr. C more. I primped a little more and giggled a little louder when I knew he was in the room. It was a silly school girl crush, but I was drawn to him for the kindness he showed me. He could have just grabbed me and kiss me; but he was respectful, and he surprised me.

The BIG moment happened at the show choir end-of-the-year party. My neighbor, Brandon, had everyone over for an evening of choir-nerd craziness. My affections for Mr. C had never faltered throughout the school year. Of course, I never said anything to anyone. Everyone new my dirty laundry when it came to the boy, so I decided to keep my feelings for Mr.C a secret.

Our friends were playing games in the backyard, and we managed to break away from the group alone. At some point in the time we had been going to school together, he had told me he used to box. You know I had to play the girl card and ask, (in a high-pitched, flirty voice) "Will you teach me how to box?" For a girl, this is absolutely genius, because a guy will never tell you "no" when you ask him to show off or teach you something he is confidently skilled at. I tried to hide my ridiculous smile and rosy-red cheeks while he molded my hands to form the perfect punching fists. He taught me how to stand, where to hold my hands, and the obvious, how to punch. We were having so much fun; we didn't even notice everyone had returned inside the house. This was not by accident. You see, Brandon, knowing me better than I know myself sometimes, caught wind of my affections and concocted a plan to move everyone inside to give us alone time. I found out later that they all watched us from the windows. The cat was out of the bag. Meanwhile, outside, our boxing lesson had ended and the conversation took an interesting turn.

"Can I ask you something?" I said, nervously.
"Sure." He smiled.
"Do you like me?"
"Well, that was a blunt question."
Embarrassed by his retort, I giggled. "Yeah, I guess it is."
"Do you like me?" His question caught me off guard. Although he had a wicked grin on his face, I struggled to answer the truth. Fear of rejection got the best of me.
"No." Stupid girl.

He obviously liked me, otherwise he would have just said "no" instead of turning the question back on me. I always questioned whether he did, because of the way he always smiled at me or how I would catch him listening a little too closely when I told stories and jokes. I should have known better.

"Do you?" I repeated the question.
"No." Rejection found me, even though I knew I shouldn't feel sad, because I just told him I didn't like him. I was definitely not going to tell him the truth after he answered "no."

He was a grade behind me, so when I went on to the senior high my junior year, we didn't see each other until I attended the show choir's Christmas Concert the next December. After their performance, I approached his welcoming smile to tell him about his great performance.

Timing is everything. At the beginning of junior year, the boy, managed to control his wandering eye and gave his undivided attention to me. I was thrilled to finally receive his affections, but over the course of the fall semester, the boy's attention started to falter. You see, the boy didn't want to be with me, but didn't want me to be with anyone else either. He quickly noticed my reaction to seeing Mr. C at the Christmas Concert and noted the time we spent together over the next month.

Mr. C was such a good friend to me. We would talk on the phone for hours, and he would listen to me complain about what the boy had done this week. Mr. C was the perfect gentleman, telling me to stay away from the boy and how he would stand up for me if I was ever hurt. He even encouraged me to continue my dream to be a singer, even though I had let that dream die some time before. I was so blind, wrapped up in the shenanigans of the boy, while missing out on the perfect guy. My feelings grew for Mr. C, and I smartened up, ready to get rid of the boy for good. But by the time I did, it was too late.

"Hey Ashton. I need to talk to you." Sadness weaved through the words from his receiver to mine.
"Hey! Is everything alright?"
"I have bad news." I couldn't stand to hear him unhappy.
"Okay, what's up?"
"I'm moving."
"Moving! When?"
"In a few weeks."

Of course this would happen, right? I finally met the right guy for me, and I had wasted too much time due to one little lie. I decided to tell him the truth about my feelings. What did I have to lose?

"So...I have something I need to tell you." It was one of those moments where you press your face into the closest pillow to muffle the shriek of your fowardness.
"Okay..."
"Remember that night in Brandon's backyard when you were teaching me to box?"
"Yeah..."
"I lied to you, when you asked me if I liked you."
".....(dramatic pause).....I lied too."

The day he left, I left school in a rush to get to his house. Guess who thought he needed to go too? The boy. So, I didn't get the bittersweet sendoff, because it was awkward to hug the guy I had fallen for, while the boy who haunted me lingered by my car. Tears fell and without Mr. C, I fell back into the vicious lonely circle with the boy.

And the story twists again...

Two years later, Mr. C. called me while I was away at college to let me know he was coming to Oklahoma over Christmas Break. Boldness escaped before I could filter my words. I asked him to take me out on a date for my birthday! He agreed, and I thought we might finally get our shot. The week before we were to see each other again, he called to tell me he had a girlfriend. Needless to say, I was bummed. I was still very excited to see him again, even if we were only meant to be friends. I'll never forget how good he looked. They always look too good, when you know you can't have them.

I think I was 20 the last time we spoke. He told me he was getting married. Talk about a final nail in the ol' coffin. Shortly after, I saw he joined the military, but it wasn't long before he deleted his Facebook account. Too much time had passed, and I assumed the phone numbers were outdated. I even Googled him once, but came up with nothing.

It been almost 10 years since that silly dare. If I could go back, I would jump in his seat, push the blanket away, grab his face, and lay a big one on him in front of everyone! I guess I'll leave that re-write for my daydreams.

The Strip Dance

Thank you Shannon for being the first to release a dirty-sad-lovey memory from my past by becoming a follower! For every new follower, I'll reveal a new one.

This story is a little dirty and kind of sad. Don't worry, there are more very embarrassing stories ahead, but I have to ease my way in.

(pic: Prom 2006- please ignore my too light foundation color!)
When I was in high school, my best friend Ben and I would have dance parties in his living room. He had this hallway that lead to his parents bedroom and bathroom but was closed off from the living room by two venetian doors. We would turn on "Dirty" by Christina Aguilera on the living room sound system and wait in the hall like backup dancers, flipping the hall light on and off (for effects) and jiggling the doors open and close during the intro of the song.  Here, have a listen while reading...

So, the music is blasting and right after Redman says, "You ain't here to party!", we would bust through the doors and you would have thought we were on stage at the 2005 Video Music Awards. Leaping off of couches, chairs, and the fireplace, we were an explosion of ridiculousness. Ben's house also had a staircase to the right of the front door that traveled up to meet a catwalk/balcony for the home's second level. You know we didn't waste such a good space. Lots of crawling and banister grinding to Christina's beats. Only with Ben could I escape to an imaginary dance world. And yes, we tortured our friends to live performances, multiple times.

(pic: Josh Gracin Concert- Summer 2006)
During my junior year, Ben and I concocted a plan to help me win over the heart of the boy, who single-handedly ruined me for every other guy who came into my life years after he became a memory (that's a story for another day). Seduction was the key. A strip dance was the plan, and Ben had all the right moves. We spent hours perfecting the naughtiest little dance, which I'm pretty sure was to be the precursor to me losing my virginity. I mean, once you're in it, you better be ready to win it.

I hate to tell you the story ends here. Blame it on the boy's predictability to be a douche bag, but he never got the dance, because he didn't deserve it. On the bright side, Ben and I had etched another fun and crazy moment into our past together. He has this beautiful spirit that lights a fire in anyone within his presence. I <3 you Ben!

Here is the song we choreographed the dance to. You might remember it from the soundtrack to City of Angels. Perfect strip dance song, right? Pretty easy to say the boy missed out.

7-8. Slammed and Point of Retreat
http://colleenhoover.com/

Light on the dirty, heavy on the love angst and sexual tension. I crushed on this story from page one. Layken Cohen grudgingly moves with her mother and little brother from Texas to Michigan after the sudden death of her father. On move-in day, she meets her neighbor, Will Cooper, and his little brother, Kel. Will is a dress-shirt-and-a-tie hottie, who is older, more mature, and quick on his game asking Layken on a date. (I love a good romance that doesn't make you wait until the tenth chapter for a first date! Mmm...hmm.) The two connect immediately, but within the week they find themselves in a very "rule-breaking" situation. I want to tell you...oh so bad...what the twist is, but I can't. I want to tell you; because it is the reason I am so attracted to this story. Maybe I'll tell you some day ;-) The story has a wonderful combination of love, friendship, family, feel-good moments, but also sinks into the character's heartbreak and sadness.

As soon as I swiped my finger to the last page of Slammed on the Kindle App, I immediately downloaded the second book, Point of Retreat. The best part about this series is Slammed is from Layken's POV, while Point of Retreat is from Will's. It was a bit of transition in the first chapter, reading from Will perspective, but I grew to love it so much more. While reading Slammed, you're constantly wondering what Will is thinking, and now you know. It is the perfect sequel, and you will love every syllable of it.
And now for some really good news...Colleen is currently working on This Girl, the next book in the series. This book is written from Will's POV but plays out in the past and future, switching so you can read what he thought during scenes in Slammed, while seeing glimpses into the couple's future. Can't freaking wait!!!

9-10. Thoughtless and Effortless

BEWARE: If you're not into reading about infidelity. This book is not for you. BUT...if you're like me, and you want to read how a good girl plays dirty with her perfect Australian boyfriend while screwing the smoldering, melts in your mouth and in your hand, rock star, best friend and roommate (I just got chills thinking about his fictitious body...ridiculous.), then click the link above and drool over the damn thing. I will say, the book seems to be slow in a few places, but when it's good, it's OH YES, YES (think Herbal Essences) good.
Effortless. Also a great sequel. Deals a lot with jealousy and trust issues. Takes me back to my pre-teen days of dreaming about Justin Timberlake, while he was touring with N'Sync. Come on, I know I wasn't the only one. Well, for my sister, it was New Kids on the Block. Whichever celebrity singer made you feel like a woman before you were old enough to have your period...you know what I mean =0...think of them, and you're sure to enjoy this one.
Oh yes. There is more to come. Reckless is expected to be release March 2013. Yummy Yummy.

11. Love Unscripted

Like The Thoughtless Series, Love Unscripted fulfills your every celebrity fantasy. Just replace the iconic singer with a heartthrob actor, and you're all set to go.

Ryan Christensen (Just sounds like a delicious movie star, right?) is shooting the second installment of a book-to-film series in Seaport, Rhode Island. An overnight sensation, Ryan still has not adjusted to the life of paparazzi and hordes of screaming girls. Taryn Mitchell is Seaside's smart and savvy pub owner. Taking over the family business after the passing of her father, Taryn works, lives, and breathes her pub. At the beginning of the story, Taryn doesn't even know who Ryan Christensen is. She's never seen his movies or read the books that have launched his on-screen celebrity status. Without her magazine-junkie best friend to keep her up-to-date on Hollywood gossip, Taryn wouldn't have recognized the man that ran into her bar in the early morning hours to seek an escape route from the crowd of obsessed fans. Taryn treats Ryan to a beer and moment to breathe. Once Ryan realizes Taryn has nothing in common with his stalker fans, he finds comfort with her, and their relationship blooms in a daydream-worthy romance that lingers in your thoughts after the last page.

But, in four days (September 14, 2012) you can re-light your Ryan Christensen desire with the sequel, Love Unrehearsed. Luckily, I just finished Love Unscripted about three weeks ago. So, I didn't have to wait long too long. Thank goodness.

12. Hearts in Darkness
 http://www.laurakayeauthor.com/hearts.html
If you're looking for an afternoon read, something to do while you are waiting in the doctor's office for two hours, this is my suggestion for you. This novella only took me about three hours to read, and I am slow reader. The only downfall to this fantasy is it doesn't last long enough!

Juggling multiple bags, a computer, and her cell phone, Makenna James stumbles in to her office building's elevator after a long and busy day at work. She catches a glimpse of a decorated hand with a dragon tattoo graciously hold the closing doors open for her before she lets her red hair fall around her, concealing her face to her elevator gentleman. Caden Grayson has more than just a dragon tattoo on his hand. His body is designed in multiple tattoos, piercings, and a scar which can be seen easily by his shaved head. A stranger might feel intimidated by Caden's appearance, but his insecurities and his claustrophobia, which he keeps hidden, portray the opposite. When the elevator comes to an abrupt stop, due to a power outage, the darkness creates an interesting situation for the two characters. Neither saw the other's appearance before the lights went out, which pulls the two characters into a relationship without judgment of appearance. After Makenna calms Caden's anxiety of small spaces, the two open up to each other and find a little, quiet, dark space is just enough to let go of many inhibitions ;-) ;-). Of course, the lights come back on when the characters are in a compromising position, but you'll just have to read to find out what happens.

I am already working on another dirty dozen for you, finishing number three last night. I will share those with you within the next month or two. I can't wait to tell you all about them!

Filled with dirty thoughts and ideas to corrupt you some more,

Ashton
